About Us

Purpose and Vision

The Kansas Speech Communication Association (KSCA) was founded in 1939 as the state association of speech in Kansas. From its early roots the KSCA has grown into a responsive organization of professionals interested and engaged in the art of effective communication.Today, the KSCA is active in its support for high school activities, teacher certification and licensure, curricular concerns, speaking and listening assessments, as well as other communication related issues. The membership of the KSCA consists of K-12 educators and coaches, community college and university faculty, theater arts practitioners, and college students in the field of communication.

Executive Board

  • Rob Egan

    President
    Wichita Collegiate HS

    Rob is in his third year as head coach at Wichita Collegiate School, his alma mater. He teaches debate, forensics and Advanced Placement US Government and Politics.  In his tenure at Collegiate, Rob has led students to both 4-Speaker (2021, 2022) and 2-Speaker State Championships (2022) in policy debate, as well as having several students earn the runner up title (2022) and 4th place (2021, 2022.) Rob has also coached multiple finalists at the 3A State Speech Championships, including an individual event champion in 2021.   Rob was named the 2020-21 Sunflower NSDA New Coach of the Year. He currently serves on the Sunflower District Committee and the Kansas Debate Classic Committee in addition to his service as KSCA First Vice President. He was the Second Vice President of KSCA for the 2021-22 year. Rob additionally serves as an appointee of Governor Laura Kelly to the Kansas Commission on Disability Concerns, serving as Chair of that commission for 2022.   He holds a B.S. in Public Policy from Arizona State University, where he is also currently pursuing an M.A. in Social Justice and Human Rights.

  • Brian Box

    Past President
    Blue Valley North HS

    Brian is entering into his tenth year in education, teaching speech and debate at both the high school and collegiate levels. He is currently at Blue Valley North High School, where he has been head coach since 2017. His coaching resume also includes a head coaching position at Campus High School and assistant coaching positions at the University of Kansas, Wichita State University, Glenbrook South, Blue Valley North, Campus, and Maize High School. Brian is a graduate of Wichita State with a B.A. in Political Science and has received his M.A. in Communication Studies from the University of Kansas. As a head coach, Brian has earned seven state trophies at BVN including the 2020 6A 2-Speaker championship. He has qualified six teams to the Tournament of Champions including the 2019 policy debate quarterfinalists. At NSDA Nationals, Brian has coached five policy debate teams to elimination rounds including a fourth-place finisher in 2019 and a sixth-place finisher in 2022. Additionally, he has coached a national runner-up in Expository Speaking and quarterfinalists in Duo Interpretation and Congressional debate. Regarding personal accolades, Brian was the 2021 DCI debate Coach of the Year, is a member of the Three Trails NSDA District Committee and the Debate Coaches Invitational Steering Committee.

  • Tim Ellis

    Membership and Mentorship Chair
    Washburn Rural HS

    Tim is currently in his tenth year as speech and debate coach at Washburn Rural High School. He is a seven-time state champion coach in policy debate with students reaching this pinnacle of achievement in KSHSAA’s 2-speaker and 4-speaker divisions. Tim is also a three-time national champion coach in policy debate, once for the NDCA and twice for the NSDA. Additionally, he has coached a four-time KSHSAA runner-up team in state forensics and has coached eight state champions in individual events. Regarding personal accolades, Tim is the two-time recipient of the Ted Belch award for NSDA national coaches, a two-time Unger Cup award winner, and a KSCA and DCI Educator of the Year. Tim graduated from KU with a B.S. in Chemistry and with a MSEd and was part of the Knowles Teaching Initiative National Cohort of 2014 in Chemistry. Tim currently teaches AP Chemistry, AP Biology, anatomy, and physical science alongside debate and forensics.

  • Mike Harris

    Wichita Southeast HS

    Mike Harris is the Director of Debate and Forensics at Wichita East High School and previously had been the Director of Debate and Forensics for three years at Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School, where he previously served as the Assistant Director of Debate and Forensics for five years.  In addition to being your KSCA Second Vice President he is also a District Committee Member for the Sunflower NSDA District and he is also a member of the Kansas Debate Classic Committee.

    Mike is a 1999 graduate of Wichita Southeast High School and holds degrees in Criminal Justice, Political Science and History from Wichita State University.

    Mike is also a member of the NSDA, NCFL and NDCA

    Mike has coached state champions in policy debate, Lincoln Douglas, Duo Interpretation, 3rd place speaker at NSDA championships, elimination rounds at major national circuit tournaments and championships in policy and Lincoln Douglas.

    He is also currently working with the Costa Rican government to develop a debate curriculum for the public and private schools.

    In addition to all of his career pursuits, Mike describes himself as a political junkie, husband, and a new dad to a wonderful baby boy.

  • Eric Skoglund

    Classification Committee Chair
    Olathe Northwest HS

    Eric has spent sixteen years coaching debate and forensics at Olathe Northwest High School where he has been the head coach since 2016. Eric is a Bachelor’s and Master’s graduate of the University of Kansas and currently teaches AP Calculus and Precalculus alongside speech and debate. Eric has coached six state champions in the 6A speech tournament and a 6A runner-up in the 2- speaker policy debate tournament. Eric has also qualified numerous students to the NSDA national tournament. Eric is the current chair of the East Kansas NSDA district and the 6A classification representative to the KSHSAA serving alongside 5A-1A classifications.
